Water conducts electricity. While supplies of water and electricity have become essential to a comfortable lifestyle, we should not take them for granted or risk electrocution by operating electrical equipment in damp conditions. Talk to us if you’re not certain what electrical or plumbing repairs are covered by your Pennsylvania home insurance.

Take care when you are handling electrical equipment in damp areas or near water.

• Never touch power points, switches, light fittings, or electrical appliances with wet hands or try to clean them with a damp cloth.
• Don’t use portable electric heaters in the laundry room or bathroom.
• Never wash electrical appliances or immerse them in water unless the manufacturer’s instructions allow this.
• Don’t use electrical appliances near ponds or pools where they could fall into the water or be damaged by splashing.
• An electrical appliance that has been splashed with water should be switched off immediately at the power point. Unplug it, and don’t use it again until a licensed electrical contractor has checked it.

It’s disturbing to find water on the floor of your home, and your first impulse may be to go in to save furniture and possessions from damage. Don’t do this: you may be in danger of electric shock! Remember that your Pennsylvania home insurance may compensate you for possessions that are damaged by water and your personal safety must be your highest priority in this situation!
